FORT EUTIS, VA (Rocktown Now) — Governor Abigail Spanberger announced on Thursday the launch of the Virginia Veteran Registered Apprenticeship Muster, a new workforce initiative aimed at connecting transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses with high-demand careers.
The event brought together veterans and employers to discuss the challenges many face when reentering civilian life, as well as opportunities to better align military experience with workforce needs. Spanberger also issued a proclamation recognizing National Apprenticeship Week in Virginia, underscoring her administration’s focus on expanding access to stable, well-paying career pathways.
“Today’s event is the result of tremendous collaboration across agencies and organizations to help some of our bravest neighbors who are looking to start new chapters in their careers,” Spanberger said. “Virginia’s veteran community is one of our Commonwealth’s greatest assets, and we must ensure we are supporting them in finding high-quality civilian careers.”
The apprenticeship muster is part of a broader statewide effort led by Virginia Works and its partners, who are hosting dozens of events during the week. Activities include school outreach programs, employer networking events, and apprenticeship signing ceremonies designed to connect Virginians with hands-on training in high-demand industries.
The initiative builds on recent legislative efforts to expand apprenticeship access. Earlier this week in Roanoke, Spanberger signed bipartisan legislation to increase opportunities for high school students and expand the number of qualified Career and Technical Education instructors.
Jessica Looman emphasized the economic impact of such programs, noting that apprenticeships provide “earn while you learn” opportunities that help workers build sustainable careers while supporting their families.
State officials say the expanded focus on apprenticeships is intended to strengthen Virginia’s workforce pipeline while ensuring veterans can successfully transition into civilian employment.
