ABINGTON VA: (Rocktown Now) – The Turner Ashby Knights fell short of winning their eighth state championship in baseball, losing 8-3 to the New Kent Trojans on Saturday afternoon in Abingdon. It was a five-run second inning, the difference in the game as the Trojans pushed across 5. They outhit Turner Ashby 16-7. The Knights gave themselves chances in the later innings, but could not find enough offense to get more runs on the board. Again, the final score, New Kent 8, Turner Ashby 3.

Meanwhile, Abingdon scored in each of the first four innings and built a seven to nothing Leed and held off Broadway for a 7-3 win to complete a perfect 30 and O season and win the class three state softball championship. The gobblers who won the state title last year, trailed 7-1 going into the last inning, scored twice to make it 7-3. But a strikeout ended the game and the Gobblers will settle for state runner-up this year.
