BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College baseball team used effective pitching and defense to help guide the team past Washington and Lee 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Eagles got their offense started in the bottom of the second when Tristan Gordon hit a shallow single to right center field. Lucas Bauer started his afternoon off right hitting a double down the right field line putting two runners in scoring position. Isaac Sumpter made it a 1-0 game hitting an RBI ground out to the short stop.
• BC went right back to its scoring ways in the home half of the fourth inning when Gordon led off the inning drawing a walk. The Generals attempted a throwdown to first base to try and get Gordon but threw it away allowing the advancement to second base. Bauer struck a single up the middle leading WLU to go to its bullpen middle of the inning. Nick Dawson got the first hit off the new pitcher rattling off an RBI single to center field. With two outs, Brandan Hartman patiently drew a walk to load the bases for Ashton Smith. Smith recorded a bloop single to right field that drove in two runs extending the lead to 4-0.
• James Swart produced a quick final inning in the top of the fifth getting the first batter out on strikes, then following a single relied on his defense to turn the 6-4-3 double play.
• Washington and Lee found its offense in the in the top of the eighth when Paul Ramseur popped a single to center. Back-to-back walks thrown by Bridgewater loaded the bases for the Generals. Drew Larsen came to the plate hitting a ground ball to the short stop but was able to use his speed to reach on a fielder’s choice and make it 4-1. Nick Harris, who came in during the inning, induced a huge ground out to get the second double play of the game for the Eagles.
• Nick Harris came back out in the top of the ninth and got the batters out in order to give BC the 4-1 victory.
GAME STATS
• Hartman was perfect from the dish going 2-for-2 with two walks, while Bauer went 3-for-4 and scored one run.
• Smith recorded two RBIs after singling in the bottom of the fourth.
• WLU was held to just four hits with Ramseur leading the way going 3-for-3.
• Swart picked up his second win of the season after going 5.0 innings only allowing two hits and striking out five. Andrew Baugher pitched in relief for pitching two shutout innings with one strike out. Nick Harris registered his third save on the year producing the same stat line as Baugher.
• Matt Fleming was strapped with the loss after 3.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater will head to Farmville, Virginia this Saturday, April 27 to square off with Hampden-Sydney in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
