HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – The quartet of redshirt sophomore T.R. Williams, redshirt senior Hunter Entsminger, sophomore Max Kuhle and senior Joe Vogatsky combined for six-plus shutout innings out of the bullpen to help James Madison baseball sweep Georgia Southern at Veterans Memorial Park with an 8-4 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Dukes improved to 24-15 overall and 10-8 in Sun Belt Conference action, hitting at least 10 wins in league play for a third consecutive season for the first time since 2006-13. JMU also has four home sweeps this season, the most since sweeping six series in 2006. The Eagles dropped to 19-20, 9-9 Sun Belt.
Sophomore Mike Mancini led at the plate with a 2-for-2 effort, scoring a career-high-tying four runs while homering and recording two RBI’s. Williams earned the win to move to 1-1 this season behind a season-high three innings of relief and a season-high-tying three strikeouts, while not giving up a run.
How It Happened
First Inning
JMU struck first with three runs after junior Ryan Dooley led off the inning with a walk. The next at bat, classmate Fenwick Trimble drove him in on a double before scoring himself on a single from Mancini. Mancini then trotted home on a single from junior Coleman Calabrese three batters later.
Second Inning
A two-out solo shot from Sean White got GS on the board.
Third Inning
Mancini extended JMU’s lead back to three runs after leading off with a walk and then stealing second base and moving to third on a wide throw on the stolen base. He then touched home plate on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Fourth Inning
Two homers from Georgia Southern scored three runs to tie the game at four.
Fifth Inning
The Dukes retook the lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Wyatt Peifer that brought home Mancini to make it 5-4.
Seventh Inning
Back-to-back home runs from Trimble and Mancini put two runs on the board for the Dukes before a third run would be scored in the inning on a groundout to double the lead to 8-4.
