James Madison Men’s Basketball received two more verbal commitments on Monday as head coach Preston Spradlin continues to build his first roster at JMU. Former Morehead State guard Eddie Ricks III and former Syracuse guard Justin Taylor both announced on social media Monday that they’re transferring to play for the Dukes.

Ricks, who played for Spradlin at Morehead State, averaged 7.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 blocks per game as a freshman this past season. The 6-6 Clarksville, Tennessee native played in all 35 games for the Eagles and made four starts. He averaged 25.2 minutes per game, shot 43.1 percent (94-218) from the floor, 31.1 percent (33-106) from the three-point line and 64.1 percent (41-64) from the free throw line. Ricks was ranked as the third best player in the state of Tennessee according to Prep Hoops as a senior at Clarksville Academy

Taylor, who is a Charlottesville, Virginia native, returns to the Commonwealth to play at his mother’s alma mater as she played basketball at JMU. Taylor began his high school career at Saint Anne’s-Belfield before finishing up at IMG Academy in Florida.

The 6-6 Taylor will have two years of eligibility remaining as he started all 32 games at Syracuse this past season as a sophomore. He averaged 5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. Taylor averaged 23.2 minutes per game and over his two years for the Orange, he shot 36.4 percent overall, 34.0 percent from three and 69.2 percent from the foul line.

Three players have now committed to James Madison head coach Preston Spradlin over the last two days as Ricks and Taylor join John Marshall high school senior Redd Thompson, who committed on Sunday.
