James Madison men’s basketball coach Preston Spradlin received his first verbal commitment from a recruit on Sunday night as he looks to rebuild the JMU roster. Richmond native Redd Thompson announced his intention to play for the Dukes on social media Sunday night.

Thompson, who is a senior at John Marshall High School, had signed a national letter of intent to play at JMU in November for the previous coaching staff, but he decommitted and reopened his recruitment after Mark Byington was hired at Vanderbilt last month.

Thompson, a three-star recruit, helped John Marshall to its third consecutive VHSL Class 2 State Championship in March, and he led the Justices with 17.6 points and 4.2 assists per game this past season.
