HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – For the first time in nearly two decades, Harrisonburg City Public Schools is getting a new boss for school nutrition.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards introduced Heather Yutzy as the new Director of School Nutrition at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

Yutzy comes to Harrisonburg after working as the WIC Program Coordinator/Director for the Fairfax County Health Department. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in nutrition from Bastyr University.

Richards explained the title of Yutzy’s thesis at the meeting.

“Fruit and vegetable choices of elementary students following nutrition education and repeated food exposure…that could not be better, I mean, that’s perfect,” Richards said. I don’t know if my 10-year-old is part of you study, but he should be!”

Yutzy will begin on June 3. She replaces former nutrition director Andrea Early, who left HCPS after nearly 18 years to work in a different school division.
