HARRISONBURG, Va. (EMU Athletics) – On a Sunday afternoon matchup, the EMU Royals received the Methodist University Monarchs at home.

In what was a heavily disputed game at midfield, the Monarchs managed to score the only goal of the match after a penalty kick in the first half, which would be all that was needed in a 1-0 MU win.

Highlights
• Both teams fought fiercely to gain the advantage in the first half, however, both defenses stood solid. Proof of that is that the Royals only had two shots on goal in the first half. Their first shot came in the ninth minute after an attempt made by Bridget Hay, that was captured by the Monarchs’ keeper. The Royals’ second attempt on goal would come later in the half after a shot taken by Maggie Ladd, but that shot was also successfully corralled by the Monarchs’ goalkeeper.
• The Royals’ defense was also on point as they also only allowed two shots on goal, both of which were successfully saved by EMU’s goalkeeper, C.J. Jefferson.
• Unfortunately for the Royals, the only goal of the game was scored by the Monarchs when the referee awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box committed by Evalyn Paredes.
• At the start of the second half, the Royals came out determined to score the goal that would tie the match. Their first attempt would come in the 54th minute after a shot taken by Hannah Kepler on a through ball, but it was turned away by the Methodist keeper.
• The other EMU attempts would come later in the half at the 75th and 82nd minutes but would prove unsuccessful. Both shots would be taken by Esme Cardoso, but to no avail.
• The Monarchs only recorded two scoring attempts in the second half, but they were both off the posts.
