AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — A diesel spill was at the center of an accident that snarled traffic on Interstate-81 this morning in Augusta County.

Fire Lieutenant Aaron Bryant said the two-vehicle crash happened on I-81 North shortly after 7 o’clock near the Middle River overpass bridge at mile marker 228 in Verona.

“It involved two vehicles: one pickup truck pulling a trailer and one tractor trailer,” Bryant noted. “It had a fifty gallon diesel fuel spill that we notified (the Department of Environmental Quality) on.”

Bryant reported that a hazardous materials crew cleaned up the diesel spill, and by 8am, Augusta County Fire and Rescue had cleared the scene.

No one was injured in the incident.

Both northbound lanes were temporarily closed as a heavy wrecker team worked to straighten the tractor trailer for removal.
