HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Jonathan Dean, the former public service manager for the City of Charlottesville and long-time public servant, has been selected as the new Harrisonburg Public Works deputy director.

Dean reportedly brings more than a decade of experience in municipal public works and public administration to Harrisonburg, and most recently oversaw a wide range of public infrastructure and operational programs – including pavement management, sidewalks, traffic signals, solid waste and recycling, snow and ice operations, emergency management planning and asset management – in Charlottesville. Prior to serving as public service manager, Dean held several leadership roles within Charlottesville Public Works, including interim fleet manager, management analyst II and program coordinator.

Dean holds a master of public administration and a bachelor’s degree in political science from James Madison University.

He has led strategic planning initiatives, managed capital budgets, implemented performance management systems, coordinated emergency response planning and developed innovative solutions to improve municipal operations throughout his career.

“Jonathan brings extensive experience in local government and a collaborative approach to leadership,” Harrisonburg Director of Public Works Tom Hartman said. “His background in operations, asset management and organizational improvement will be a tremendous asset to our department and the Harrisonburg community. We are excited to welcome him to the team.”

Dean will assist in overseeing the department’s operations and strategic initiatives as deputy director while supporting the delivery of essential public services to community members.

“I am equally grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve the Harrisonburg community in this role,” Dean said. “As a long-time resident of the area, it has been compelling to see the growth and progress of this city. To now be able to join this organization and the team at Public Works to contribute toward the collective improvements ongoing and into the future is a privilege. I look forward to connecting with the people of Harrisonburg and helping to continue the great work of the Public Works Department.”
