As I wrote last month, visiting a retirement community is an exciting step. You are exploring what could become your new home, so you want to be sure you’re making the right decision. In the end, while attributes such as location, cost, and health care options matter, you should opt for the community where you feel you belong.
Here are four more important questions to ask during your visit:
1. What healthcare services are available on-site?
Even if you don’t need care today, planning ahead is an important part of the decision. Ask what healthcare services are available, including access to physicians, nursing, therapy, and how transitions between levels of care are handled.
At BRC, residents have access to a full continuum of care on one campus, offering reassurance and support as needs change over time.
2. What makes this community different?
This is one of the most important, revealing questions you can ask.
Every community has its own personality, culture, and approach to well-being. Pay attention not only to what is said, but how the community feels. Do people seem engaged, welcoming, and at ease?
At BRC, people often say, “It just feels different here”—a reflection of our strong sense of community and shared purpose.
3. How does the waitlist work?
Many retirement communities have waitlists, so it’s important to understand how the process works and when to start planning.
Ask how to join, whether a deposit is required, how priority is determined, and typical wait times.
At BRC, we encourage early planning and work closely with individuals to help them navigate timing and options in a way that feels comfortable and informed.
4. What is the process for moving in?
Understanding the move-in process can help you feel more confident in your decision. Ask about application steps, timelines, and what support is available during the transition.
At BRC, our team walks alongside each new resident throughout the process—from planning and downsizing to settling in—so the transition feels smooth and supported.
Of course, there are many more questions you could ask. But while questions are important, so is your overall impression. Can you picture yourself building relationships there? At the end of the day, the right community isn’t just the one that checks all the boxes—it’s the one that feels like home.
If you are unsure where to start, give me a call at Bridgewater Retirement Community. I love talking to older adults and their families, and I can help you plan your quest for a place to live. We may not be the best fit for everyone, but you’ll never know if you don’t ask the right questions.
