How It Happened
• Riley Corcoran knocked down a three-pointer to get the scoring started and put BC ahead, but Randolph-Macon capitalized on a second-chance effort to get on the board. RMC responded with two more scores to take a 6-3 lead, but a free throw make by Corcoran and another basket from the senior tied the game at 6-6. The two sides traded scores, but the Yellow Jackets followed with scores as the Eagles went cold. RMC rolled to a 10-2 scoring run over the final 3:08 of the opening period, taking an 18-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
• It took over two minutes for either team to find nylon in the second quarter, as it was Corcoran again striking for the Eagles. Another second-chance effort led to RMC’s next bucket, and it was full speed ahead for the Yellow Jackets as BC struggled from the field. The home team went on an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 29-16 with under three minutes to go in the half. Corcoran ended a five-minute drought for the Eagles on a put-back after BC had missed its last five attempts from the field. The Eagles got a stop, but a turnover led to RMC’s next score. Autumn Gentry made a free throw, but another bucket on the tail end of that from the Yellow Jackets gave the home team a 33-19 lead at the break.
• Jaiden Polston made one-of-two at the free-throw line to open the second half, and Jay Garcia followed with a second-chance bucket to cut the gap to 11 points. A three-pointer by the Yellow Jackets followed, and they embarked on a 9-0 scoring run to stretch the lead to 42-22. A Corcoran bucket ended the run and allowed the Eagles to get some offense going. BC responded with an 8-4 run of their own as a Corcoran score sliced the gap to 16 points. Back-to-back buckets by the Yellow Jackets in the final minute stretched the lead back out to 50-30 heading to the fourth quarter.
• The fourth quarter opened with a make by the home team, and RMC stretched the lead to 58-33 with an 8-3 run. Polston helped the Eagles respond as she went on a 6-0 run by herself to get within 20 points. Another second-chance score for the Yellow Jackets stalled the momentum with 3:50 to go. BC regrouped as a pair of makes at the charity stripe by Garcia started a 7-0 Eagles’ run to cut the gap to 14 points with just over a minute to go, but a RMC three-pointer on cue ended the run and helped secure the victory for RMC.
Match Notes
