AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — An injured hiker was rescued yesterday in Augusta County amidst deadly low temperatures.
Wintergreen Fire and Rescue reports that around 5:41 Sunday morning, authorities were notified of a “text to 911” message from a forest off Blue Ridge Parkway.
Search and Rescue teams, including personnel from Augusta County, made contact with the hiker at around 9am and built a fire to warm the patient before attempting extraction.
The Virginia Sate Police aviation unit from Chesterfield was called in to winch the patient out of the forest, but after several attempts to get into position for a hoist, strong wind gusts forced the team to abort the mission.
At around 1pm, the Virginia Army Guard dispatched a Blackhawk team and with assistance from 32 people deployed to the trail, the patient was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, concluding the over 10-hour long rescue call.
