LURAY VA: (Rocktown Now) – A planned prescribed burn in Big Meadows scheduled for today, November 17, has been cancelled due to deteriorating weather conditions. Park officials cited increasingly unfavorable forecasts as the reason for halting the operation.

In addition, a parkwide fire ban is in effect today. Beginning Sunday, November 16, at 8:00 a.m. and continuing through 8:00 p.m., Shenandoah National Park is prohibiting all open-air fires. This includes wood fires, charcoal fires, wood-burning camp stoves, charcoal grills, and even gas or propane cooking stoves.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings and wind advisories for areas adjacent to the park, signaling heightened fire danger. Officials urge visitors to comply with the ban and exercise caution during this period of increased wildfire risk.
For updates and safety information, visitors can check the park’s official website or social media channels.
