RICHMOND, Va. — One of the victims of last night’s shooting outside a graduation ceremony in Richmond had just received his diploma moments earlier.
Two people, an 18 and 36-year-old man, were killed outside the Altria Theater on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus shortly after 5 o’clock.
Their identities have not been released, but reports show that the youngest victim had just walked the stage during the Huguenot High School graduation.
Five others were wounded, ranging in age from 14 to 58 years old. A 9-year-old was struck by a fleeing car, and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Richmond acting police chief Rick Edwards said one person was detained with a firearm but is not believed to be connected with the violence. However, he said a second suspect is in custody who authorities say fired multiple weapons into the gathering crowd.
The 19-year-old is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
Edwards added that the suspect knew “at least one” of the victims.
