HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — New Creation VA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creatively counteracting human trafficking through a unique blend of local impact and global partnerships. With a mission rooted in compassion and action, the organization has partnered with over 200 groups across five continents to create dignified work opportunities for survivors and those at risk of exploitation.
At the core of New Creation VA’s approach is a belief in the transformative power of education and job creation. By empowering individuals through meaningful employment and equipping communities with knowledge about the signs and dangers of trafficking, the organization addresses both the root causes and the long-term effects of this global crisis. Their prevention education programs target communities, businesses, families, and youth, offering tools to recognize and prevent trafficking before it begins.
The story of New Creation VA began humbly—at a dining room table. When co-founder Sabrina Dorman-Andrew first learned about human trafficking, she felt overwhelmed but compelled to act. Alongside her husband Steve, she began selling handmade Ugandan paper beads from their home, donating profits to organizations working in Africa.
Their passion grew, and in 2014, Sabrina and Steve took a bold step: they purchased a former adult entertainment store and transformed it into a vibrant space of hope and renewal. Today, that same building houses survivor-made and fair-trade goods from artisans around the world. Every product sold supports New Creation VA’s mission, with 100% of profits funding anti-trafficking efforts and survivor restoration.
Turning Compassion into Action in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a devastating global crisis that affects over 40.9 million people at any given time. It’s not limited to far-off places—it happens every day, in every country, and within our own communities. Traffickers prey on the most vulnerable, especially those facing extreme poverty and unemployment. That’s why New Creation VA is committed to addressing these root issues and offering real solutions.
With alarming statistics like over 90,000 victims detected globally in 2021—and one in three being children—the scale of the problem can feel overwhelming. But New Creation VA believes that everyone can play a role in the fight for freedom.
One powerful way the organization invites people to make a difference is through The Shop—a marketplace filled with survivor-made and fair trade goods from around the world. Every purchase directly supports dignified work and provides financial stability to artisans and their families.
Each item on the shelves tells a story of hope and resilience. And with every hour of work supported through a sale, customers become part of that journey—proving that even small actions can lead to big change.
Tackling the Root Causes Through Prevention Education
Human trafficking often begins with vulnerability, especially among children and teens. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), poverty, and trauma are common risk factors, and statistics show that in a classroom of 30 students, as many as 24 may have experienced some form of trauma. The average age a person is first trafficked is just 12 years old, and child trafficking occurs in all 50 states.
To combat this, New Creation VA supports and sponsors evidence-based prevention programs aimed at empowering young people:
- MBF Child Safety Matters® (CSM) is a curriculum for grades K-5, designed to help children recognize and respond to bullying, abuse, and online dangers through two engaging lessons.
- The Prevention Project™ (TPP) is a two-part curriculum for middle schoolers and a six-lesson program for high school students. It educates youth on trafficking tactics, online safety, and leadership development—equipping students not just to protect themselves but to become part of the solution.
These programs are already in place across multiple Virginia school districts, including Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, and more.
Training the Adults Who Can Make a Difference
New Creation VA also equips adults through targeted training opportunities:
- OnWatch™ Training: A survivor-led program that helps individuals recognize and report trafficking in everyday environments. Through a partnership with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, New Creation VA promotes this essential training to businesses and community members.
- Healthcare-Specific Training: Studies show that 88% of domestic sex trafficking survivors had contact with a healthcare provider while being trafficked. That’s why New Creation VA offers 1–2 hour “Health + Human Trafficking” training sessions, which include verification letters and CE credit options in collaboration with partner organizations.
Organizations trained include the University of Virginia Medical Center, Radford University College of Nursing, the Medical Society of Virginia, and others. For individuals, New Creation VA recommends additional resources through partners like Freedom 4/24, Global Centurion, and the Safe House Project, which offer webinars and certified medical trainings.
One Step Ahead
New Creation VA’s prevention efforts reflect a proactive approach to ending human trafficking. From elementary classrooms to hospital break rooms, the goal is to equip every person—no matter their age or profession—with the knowledge and tools to recognize, prevent, and respond to trafficking.
Through education, advocacy, and a relentless commitment to empowering survivors and communities, New Creation VA is working one step ahead—building a world where trafficking has no place and freedom is possible for all.
Meeting Immediate Needs
While New Creation VA does not provide direct care services itself, it actively steps in to meet urgent, real-life needs for survivors in the community. From providing gas, groceries, and clothing to covering transportation, medical care, and counseling costs, the organization helps remove practical barriers that can stand in the way of recovery. During the holiday season, New Creation VA has even helped provide Christmas gifts, reminding survivors that they are seen, valued, and supported.
Partnering for Long-Term Support
To ensure comprehensive care, New Creation VA partners with both local and national organizations dedicated to direct survivor services:
- Stone Haven, based locally, offers personalized care to women who have experienced sexual exploitation. With a focus on safety, honesty, and commitment, Stone Haven walks alongside survivors in their journey of healing. New Creation VA is proud to support and partner with this organization, helping resource survivors on their path to restoration.
- Safe House Project, a national partner, works to increase the identification of trafficking survivors and connect them with emergency services and safe housing. With access to a network of over 700 residential programs across the U.S., Safe House Project plays a critical role in ensuring survivors receive trauma-informed, holistic care. New Creation VA collaborates with this network to find the best placement and support options for survivors in crisis.
A Bridge to Restoration
Whether it’s a tank of gas or a connection to a national safe house, every act of support from New Creation VA is a step toward healing for survivors of human trafficking. Through strong partnerships and a deep commitment to care, the organization continues to serve as a vital bridge—helping survivors move from exploitation toward a life of dignity, freedom, and hope.
