JONESBORO, Ark. – After rain washed out the first two games of the series, James Madison baseball used a five-run tenth inning to take down Arkansas State, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference baseball at Tomlinson Stadium.
The Dukes improve to 14-9, 2-2 SBC while the Red Wolves dropped their ninth consecutive game and sit at 7-14, 0-4 SBC.
Junior Ryan Murphy started for the Dukes and went five innings, giving up just one run on five hits and struck out a career-high tying seven. Classmate Joe Vogatsky earned his first win of the season in two-and-a-third innings of work and three strikeouts. Redshirt senior Kyle Novak led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored.
How It Happened
Third Inning
Arkansas State took the first lead of the game courtesy of a solo shot in the third inning.
Fourth Inning
JMU responded quickly, scoring four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Novak tripled in sophomore Fenwick Trimble to tie the game before scoring the next at bat on a single from redshirt senior Trevon Dabney. Freshman Mike Mancini the used a bunt single to get on and a Red Wolves throwing error allowed him to make it to third and Dabney to score. Graduate Jaylon Lee hit a sacrifice fly next to score Mancini.
Sixth Inning
The Red Wolves used a two-out single to get a run back and make it 4-2.
Eighth Inning
Back-to-back singles with two outs allowed ASU to score two runs to tie the game at four.
10th inning
Five runs in the 10th was the difference maker for the Dukes, as Trimble gave the Dukes the lead once again on a two-run double. After Novak was hit by a pitch, a muffed throw trying to get Dabney out allowed Trimble to score all the way from second. After the Red Wolves were able to get two outs, freshman Wyatt Peifer laced a single into right field to score two more runs and give JMU a 9-4 lead.
