Planning a summer road trip? Before you load up the cooler and crank up the playlist, there’s one more checklist you should be making—one that could save you money, stress, and serious headaches if something goes wrong on the road.

We’ve talked before about being prepared for an accident here in the Valley, but heading out of town—especially across state lines—comes with a whole new set of risks and responsibilities.

Here’s what you should know before hitting the highway:

1. Understand Your Insurance
Insurance policies are complicated—and they don’t get easier just because you’re on vacation. Before you travel, call your agent. Make sure you know what your policy actually covers. Don’t assume your coverage at home will protect you everywhere.

2. Get That Maintenance Done
Nothing ruins a road trip like a preventable breakdown. Make time for basic maintenance: oil changes, brakes, tires, fluids. It’s the stuff people often delay, but it makes a big difference when you’re hundreds of miles from home.

3. Check Local Laws
Each state has its own rules—especially when it comes to things like cell phone use, seat belts, and towing. Some states have different standards for liability in an accident, too. A little research can go a long way.

4. Towing Costs Can Surprise You
In Virginia, you might be used to how towing works. But in another state? You could be on the hook for significantly more. Know what your insurance includes, and what it doesn’t. That unexpected bill could hurt more than the fender bender.

5. Consider Roadside Assistance
Whether it’s through your insurance, AAA, or another service, having roadside help on standby gives serious peace of mind. Especially if you’re not familiar with the area—or if it’s late at night on a highway in the middle of nowhere.

6. Think About Rental Insurance
Before You Need It Here’s a tip: rent a car before your trip. Not only could it save wear and tear on your own vehicle, but in the event of an accident, you’ll have backup. If your car ends up in the shop far from home, you don’t want to be scrambling for a rental—and footing the bill without coverage.

At Harrisonburg Collision Center, we’ve seen what happens when drivers aren’t prepared. A little planning now can save you a lot of stress later. Safe travels—and enjoy the ride.
