The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a phone scam that attempts to extort money from area residents by threatening legal action.

Sheriff Donald Smith said in a release that the call originates from a spoofed number that shows up as Augusta County Circuit Court. The caller states there’s an active warrant out for the answering party’s arrest, and that funds should be transferred into a P-N-C bank account to prevent prosecution.

Smith added that law enforcement does not conduct business this way, and anyone who transfers money into this account is unlikely to ever get it back.
