WINCHESTER, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College men’s lacrosse team picked up a 12-8 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday night.
Records: Bridgewater 5-9 (3-4 ODAC); Shenandoah 5-8 (2-4 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Shenandoah struck first after a save in its own end led to quick tally the other way to make it 1-0 just over a minute in. BC formulated a response after a turnover forced by Liam Santilli. Blake Sherin found the back of the net to even the score and a quick-unassisted tally by Jake Wagner followed to make it 2-1. The teams traded chances, before an Eagles turnover and a good SU clear led to the game-leveling strike by the Hornets. SU added a goal inside the final minute to take the lead back at a 3-2 mark and a buzzer beater by the home side made it 4-2 after the opening 15 minutes of play.
• The Eagles dominated the entirety of the second quarter. BC won the opening faceoff and went down and scored as Ryan linn found the back of the net to cut into the lead. SU had multiple chances, but the BC defense spoiled them with back-to-back shot clock violations. BC cashed in on the second violation as Issac Beals buried his shot in the back of the net to tie the game 4-4 midway through the period. Two saves by Gabe Wallman for BC in the cage kept the momentum rolling. The Eagles worked the ball down and Tyler Pinto rifled his shot to the nylon to give Bridgewater the lead back at 5-4. BC cashed in on a man advantage inside of the final minute as Beals buried his shot on a dish by Linn to make it 6-4 heading to the break.
• BC started the third the way they ended the second after the teams traded chances. Wallman made a save and BC flipped the field as Owen Cogan found the back of the net to extend the advantage. The Eagles stretched the lead to as much as 9-4 with 3:05 to play in the quarter after goals by Beals and Luke Wendler. Shenandoah ended the swing on the man advantage to make it 9-5, but Wendler’s second tally of the quarter made it 10-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
• The Hornets struck first just over two minutes into the fourth, but Wendler’s hat-trick score made it a five-goal game once again. SU responded out of a timeout to make it 11-7 with 8:59 to play and capitalized on a BC turnover in its own end with a fast score to make it 11-8 with 5:35 on the lock. Bridgewater capitalized on a Shenandoah miscue and Sherin scored his second goal of the night to stretch the lead back out to 12-8 with 4:29 in the contest. SU had chances to get back in the game late, but saves by Wallman and stands by the Eagles defense fought off the Hornets comeback effort.
Match Notes
• Wendler and Beals led BC with a hat trick each, while Wendler also tossed in a helper. While the offense showed up on the scoreboard, the Bridgewater defense also stood tall led by five caused turnovers by Nico Marsicano and 10 saves by Wallman in the cage.
• Cody Griffis tallied a hat trick to lead the Hornets offensively. Mark Isabelle made just five saves for SU in the cage.
• Shenandoah let the shot battle 46-34 and committed less turnovers, but the Eagles defense registered more caused turnovers and made more saves. BC also won the special teams battle, fending off one of the Hornet’s three chances a man up.
