HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Trevon Jenifer wants to help JMU students develop a newfound respect for the Paralympic movement Monday, March 31, 2025, to work with kinesiology students in the ninth annual Paralympic Skill Lab (PSL).
A four-time Paralympian and Team USA wheelchair basketball gold medalist, Jenifer will lead wheelchair basketball clinics during the event organized by JMU kinesiology professor Cathy McKay.
Designed to promote inclusivity in athletics, PSL introduces students to adaptive sports such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and goalball according to a press release. The program is expanding this year to include health professions students, integrating Paralympic principles into athletic training and occupational therapy education.
“I hope students develop a newfound respect for the Paralympic movement and sport as a whole, enough to consider integrating it into their future curriculum or activism,” said Jenifer, who has mentored students each year of the PSL. “Awareness is what drives the growth of this movement, and through the lens of disabled and Paralympic athletes, they’ll see that anything is adaptable.”
Other athletes leading sessions will be sitting volleyball team USA captain Nicky Nieves, wheelchair basketball gold medalist Ryan Neiswander and goalball silver medalist Mindy Cook.
