HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Harrisonburg City School Board heard from the Artificial Intelligence task force during last week’s work session.

Superintendent Michael Richards created the task force last spring and Director of Innovation for Instruction and Leadership Deb Cook told the board that the A-I policy will focus on balancing innovation with ethical responsibility to complement the district’s human-centered approach to education.

“We wanted to think about linguistic representation, cultural representation,” said Deb Cook. “We also wanted to think about school representation as well as departmental representation. Obviously, generative AI means something very different to an English department than it does to a math department. So, we wanted to make sure we had equity of voice and lots of different lenses of perspectives at the table.”

Cook says the next step in the process is selecting which generative A-I platforms to champion, as well as inviting families to A-I information sessions.
