HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA) has announced Jauan M. Brooks, a visual art educator from Harrisonburg High School, as a VAEA Distinguished Fellow, members who are recognized for their extraordinary service and contributions to VAEA and Virginia art education.

In a release, the VAEA said “Ms. Brooks has distinguished herself through her teaching and her commitment to her students and by giving voice to the many skills learned within an arts education. She has impacted countless lives in her classroom and the community.”

“Jauan’s passion for fostering creativity and artistic expression among students has not only enriched the Harrisonburg community but has also set a standard for educators across the state.” Under her tenure as VAEA Youth Arts Month chair, the state saw increased participation and engagement.

In addition to her role in Youth Arts Month, Jauan has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at enhancing art education and accessibility for students. Through her work, Ms. Brooks has been the recipient of numerous grants, named Harrisonburg City Public Schools teach of the year on 2 different occasions, and selected by students as a STAR teacher 5 separate years.

Ms. Brooks also serves as a Clinical Faculty member for practicum students and student teachers at James Madison University and has also taught in their Summer Artis program. In 2015, she was recognized with the JMU Alumni Award for her service.

The VAEA added that “as a Distinguished Fellow, Jauan will continue to advocate for art education, sharing her insights and experiences to inspire others in the field. Her recognition reflects not only her individual accomplishments but also the importance of art education in shaping the future of our students.”
