WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Waynesboro woman is facing charges after allegedly setting her house on fire.

Waynesboro Police say that on Wednesday, September 3, at approximately 11:30pm, they responded to a welfare check for a resident in the 900 block of 4th Street who had allegedly made threats to set her residence on fire.

Upon the officer’s arrival, they observed an active fire within the residence and officers made entry into the residence and located the occupant, Monica Smith, a 40-year-old female.

Officers say they then removed Smith from the residence for emergency medical treatment and due to that need, she was not taken into custody at the time of the incident.

Currently, the Waynesboro Police Department holds two active felony warrants for Monica Smith for the following alleged offenses:

§18.2-83 – Make and communicate a threat to bomb, burn, destroy, discharge a firearm within or at, or damage a place of assembly, building, or other structure, or means of transportation.

§18.2-77 – Maliciously burn or by the use of an explosive device or substance destroy or cause to be burned or destroyed an occupied dwelling house or manufactured home.

The Waynesboro Police Department did not provide any details about Smith’s current condition.
