WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — Waynesboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Cassell has announced his retirement.

Dr. Cassell’s retirement will be in effect at the end of the year, December 31, 2026, after more than 41 years in public education and 14 years as Superintendent of Waynesboro Public Schools.

The Superintendent said in a statement that serving the Waynesboro community has been one of the greatest honors of his career.

“To our teachers, staff, and administrators, thank you for your professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Every day, you make a lasting difference in the lives of our students. Your commitment to excellence and your belief in the potential of every child are the foundation of this division’s success. It has been an honor to serve alongside you.

To our families and community partners, thank you for your trust, encouragement, and steadfast support. Strong schools are built through strong partnerships, and I am deeply appreciative of the many individuals, businesses, and organizations that have invested in the success of Waynesboro Public Schools. Together, we have created opportunities that will positively impact students for years to come.”

School Board Chair Amber Lipscomb shared on behalf of the Board, “We thank Dr. Cassell for
his fourteen years of dedicated service and leadership to Waynesboro Public Schools. Throughout his tenure, he has remained committed to student success and to strengthening opportunities for our students, staff, and schools. We are grateful for his leadership and wish him all the best in his next chapter.”

The School Board added they will partner with the Virginia School Boards Association to conduct a
comprehensive superintendent search process that will include opportunities for community,
staff, family and other stakeholder input.
