ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — UPDATE (3:27pm): Virginia State Police Spokesman Matt Demlein reports that the suspect, 34-year-old Shawn Seal of Luray, faces felony eluding charges from Virginia State Police.
UPDATE (10:24am): A suspect in a rape and abduction in Page County is in custody after a pursuit Monday morning.
Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson says the suspect fled from Page County into Rockingham County at around 9am, where the pursuit continued westbound on Route 33. Police deployed spike strips in the Cross Keys area.
Hutcheson says the suspect vehicle was disabled, but continued West into Harrisonburg and proceeded North on I-81 as the Virginia State Police assumed the lead role in the pursuit. The vehicle crashed into the ditch in the vicinity of the 249 mile marker Northbound.
The Sheriff says a brief standoff ensued as attempts were made to get the individual to safely exit the vehicle and a short time later he was arrested safely without injury.
Additional details will be released in the future regarding the suspect and the charges.
UPDATE (10:12am): Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson is reporting that the incident that closed down all northbound lanes on I-81 in the 9 o’clock hour this morning was caused by the pursuit of an individual.
UPDATE (9:55am): One lane of I-81 has reopened.
Harrisonburg Police are reporting due to an accident in Harrisonburg on I-81, all northbound lanes are closed. The accident is at mile marker 249 and traffic is being diverted to East Market Street.
