HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Sentara RMH Medical Center is hosting a drive-thru flu shot even this Saturday, October 10, from 8am to 12pm.
No appointments are needed and shots are free.
Standard flu vaccines are available for adults 18 and older and Fluad high-dose vaccines are available for adults 65 and older.
Sentara RMH says flu shots are safe and effective vaccines that helps your body build immunity to the flu viruses predicted to be most common this season. While peak flu activity is months away, the emergency department has already seen a number of cases.
Healthcare leaders stress the importance of getting vaccinated early to reduce the spread of influenza and protect those at risk of severe illness.
“Getting the flu shot is one of the simplest ways that you can protect yourself and those that you love during flu season. It’s really important,” said Krystal Caricofe, clinical infection preventionist, Sentara RMH Medical Center. “The flu season is coming up, and the holidays, so you want to get your flu shot early to give it time to take effect. The flu can cause serious illness to the elderly population and those with certain medical conditions. So, get your flu shot. Protect yourself and everyone around you.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Sentara recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot. It is crucial for individuals at high risk for serious flu complications, including young children, pregnant people, adults 65 and older, and those with underlying health conditions.
Flu shots are also available across Sentara locations, including primary care offices, urgent care centers, pharmacies, and community clinics.
