HARRIOSNBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Sentara RMH Medical Center has been awarded a five-star Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
The CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating factors a range of quality measures across five categories: mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience, and timely & effective care. These categories are weighted to produce a single composite score. CMS uses a data-driven clustering method to assign hospitals to star categories.
According to Sentara RMH officials, nationally, around 10% of hospitals receive a five-star rating, according to recent CMS distribution data. Sentara RMH is one of only twelve hospitals in Virginia to achieve this designation for 2026.
“Earning a five-star rating from CMS is a tremendous honor and a testament to our team’s commitment to safe, high-quality care,” said Doug Moyer, president of Sentara RMH Medical Center in a release. “This recognition is the result of collaboration across teams and departments, and a deep commitment to delivering the best possible care for our patients and community.”
The five-star designation reflects the hospital’s performance across 64 quality measures, which include patient outcomes for conditions such as heart attack and pneumonia, infection rates, surgical effectiveness, unplanned hospital visits, patient satisfaction, and the overall value of care.
Sentara RMH previously held a four-star rating in 2025 and has now advanced to the top tier of hospital performance.
“This five-star rating reflects the strength of our clinical teams and the culture of safety and accountability we have built at Sentara RMH,” said Robert Garwood, MD, vice president and chief medical officer at Sentara RMH Medical Center. “Advancing from four to five stars shows how our teams use data and daily collaboration to continually improve care for the patients we serve.”
