HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Route 33 (East Market Street) in the City of Harrisonburg will be closed in both directions between South Carlton Street and Linda Lane/Burgess Road from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20.

The full Route 33 detour route, which is in-place will be utilized. This will allow the contractor to perform bridge deck pour operations on the new Route 33 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad. This work is part of ongoing construction on Route 33 at the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange in Harrisonburg,

The following detour will be used:

Westbound Route 33 drivers will turn left on Burgess Road, right on Evelyn Byrd Avenue, right on Reservoir Street, and then right on South Carlton Street to return to Route 33.

Eastbound Route 33 drivers will turn right on South Carlton Street, left on Reservoir Street, left on Evelyn Byrd Avenue, and then left on Burgess Road to return to Route 33.

I-81 southbound Exit 247B will be closed during the detour hours.  A message board will be posted on I-81 to alert drivers.

All southbound I-81 drivers who need to access Route 33 during the detour hours will take exit 247A. Digital message signs will then guide eastbound Route 33 drivers to follow the posted detour route.

All work is weather permitting, and the schedule is subject to change. The Virginia Department of Transportation will provide updates as needed.

VDOT contractors are replacing the two Route 33 bridges over I-81 at exit 247 and the two railway bridges just west of the interchange. The project also includes several improvements to the exit 247 interchange. A work-zone speed limit of 25 miles an hour is in place on Route 33 for the duration of the project, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Additional information is available on the VDOT project page.
