SPARKS, Md. (JMU Athletics) – Jordan Peterson and Brianna Mennella account for over half of the Dukes’ goals as James Madison Lacrosse defeated UConn, 13-11, at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters on Saturday afternoon.
Peterson and Mennella tallied four and three goals, respectively, joining four other JMU (2-1) players in the scoring column. Payton Root added two scores and two assists for her second straight game with multiple goals and assists. Reese Cuviello led the defense with four caused turnovers and four groundballs, both career-highs.
Abigail Beattie made the start at goalkeeper for the Dukes, logging four saves on 15 shots saved, grabbing her second win of the season.
Hadley Bethke and Megan O’Brien paced the UConn (1-2) offense with three goals apiece. Sofia Oximana started in the cage, saving seven shots on 20 shots faced.
How it Happened
First Quarter: James Madison 4, UConn 5
• The Dukes opened the contest scoring three unanswered, including two from free positions.
• UConn closed the period on a 5-1 scoring run to take its first and only lead of the game.
Second Quarter: James Madison 8, UConn 6
• JMU started the quarter with a pair of free-position goals to take the lead by one; however, a Huskie goal tied the game at six at the 6:44 mark.
• The Dukes finished the quarter with two consecutive scores, including Peterson’s second of the afternoon.
Third Quarter: James Madison 11, UConn 7
• JMU’s offense took control at the start of the half, outscoring UConn 3-1 in the frame and taking 12 shots.
• The Huskies had four eight-meter chances in the third; however, they came up empty on all
Fourth Quarter: James Madison 13, UConn 11
• Despite drawing as close as two, the Huskies couldn’t overcome the deficit as JMU secured its second straight victory.
