HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — James Madison University held the Installation Ceremony for seventh President James C. Schmidt today, April 8, 2026, at Atlantic Union Bank Center. 

This ceremony marked the official inauguration of presidential authority and the beginning of Schmidt’s tenure. 

Schmidt said during his speech that he is acutely aware of the large shoes he must fill. 

“I follow on the footsteps of great educators who helped to create an institution renowned for excellence and quality,” said Schmidt.

Schmidt officially became the president of JMU back on July 1st, replacing interim president Charlie King.
