HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — A recent donation to James Madison University has set a record as the largest cash gift the school has ever received.

JMU is announcing that a six-million-dollar contribution from the estate of Colonel Frances Weir, a 1949 graduate, will be used to set up a scholarship fund for good students in financial need. It will provide up to $240,000 dollars in scholarships every year.

Nick Langridge, JMU’s Vice President for University Advancement, told Rocktown Now that the way this fund is structured, the well will never run dry. “The interest yield off the investment of that 6 million in our JMU Foundation’s endowment will create a 4% return every year which means that $240,000 actually goes on forever.”

Colonel Weir made history after her time at then-Madison College, becoming the first female soldier in the U-S Army to ever lead an all-male unit.
