HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison men’s soccer (7-5-3, 4-1-2 SBC) played Kentucky to a 0-0 draw Sunday night at Sentara Park.
JMU outnumbered the Wildcats in shots 11-10, shots on goal 3-2 and corner kicks 7-4 but were unable to come up with the game-winning goal down the stretch. Four Dukes came away with two-shot outings as Daniel Bunk, Manuel Lolas, Luis Fuentes and Håkon Rake all helped pace JMU’s attack.
In goal, Erik Jaspers netted himself another clean sheet, making two key saves in the process. To date, Jaspers has six solo shutouts, four of which have come in Sun Belt play.
Quoting Head Coach Paul Zazenski
‘Tonight was a game of missed chances for both teams. They were better in the first half and we were better in the second. UK is a lot tougher than their record might indicate and getting a point in the Sun Belt is never an easy thing. Proud we kept a shutout and remained on top of the standings.”
How It Happened
• The Dukes got their first big chance of the match in the 19th minute off a free kick which Pieter Hengeveld handled and headed right at Kentucky’s goalkeeper.
• Another golden opportunity arose in the 38th minute when Fuentes hit a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and led to a Rake shot that was immediately blocked.
• In the late stages of the match, Chris Niblock squared his shoulders just outside the box and hit a shot at the low center part of the frame, leading to a save by Benjamin Rasmussen.
• In the 87th minute, Kentucky’s Yasha Schaerer struck a shot at the low left corner. Luckily, Jaspers made fingertip contact with the ball, altering its trajectory wide of goal.
