HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) is reporting a local uptick in scam texts.

In an online alert, authorities warn of fraudulent texts allegedly from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) again circulating throughout the area that claim the recipient has unpaid traffic tickets.

Even HPD employees have received such notifications.

However, the DMV will never send out text messages regarding fines or suspensions.

Those who receive scam texts should refrain from clicking any links, immediately report the message as junk, and delete the thread.
