HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg City Public School (HCPS) Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards discussed September being Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month during last night’s school board meeting.

Dr. Richards read in a statement on behalf of HCPS that this month is a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and reinforce the importance of recognizing when someone may be struggling.

“According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the leading cause of death in the United States and affects people of all ages,” said Dr. Richards.

Dr. Richards continued by saying that this month provides an opportunity to remind students, families, and staff that help is available and that meaningful, person-centered connections can make a difference.
