Touring a retirement community is an exciting step—but it can also feel overwhelming. With so many options and details to consider, knowing what questions to ask can help you feel confident in your decision.

The truth is, no two communities are exactly alike. Asking thoughtful questions not only helps you compare options—it helps you discover where you’ll truly feel at home.

In my role on the Marketing Team at Bridgewater Retirement Community, I’ve had the opportunity to help dozens of families successfully navigate the move to a retirement community.

Here are four of the most important questions to ask during your visit:

1. What kind of community am I visiting?

Not all retirement communities are the same, so it’s important to understand what type you’re touring.

A Life Plan Community (LPC) or Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) offers a full continuum of living—independent living, assisted living, memory support, and nursing care—all on one campus. This allows residents to stay in one place as their needs change.

In contrast, an over-55 rental community typically offers independent living only, meaning a move may be needed if care needs change.

You may also want to ask how care is structured financially, such as fee-for-service or lifecare options. At BRC, we offer a fee-for-service Life Plan Community with a full continuum of support—giving residents flexibility while providing peace of mind for the future.

2. What amenities and services are included in the monthly fee?

Amenities and costs can vary widely, so it’s important to understand exactly what is, and isn’t, included.

Ask about services such as dining, utilities, maintenance, housekeeping, transportation, and wellness programs, as well as opportunities for connection like clubs, classes, and outings. Be sure to clarify what may cost extra, including additional meals, specialized services, or higher levels of care.

BRC offers a range of amenities and services to residents such as:

  • On-site dining and catering
  • Credit union
  • State-of-the-art fitness center
  • Salons
  • Pharmacy
  • Massage studio
  • Art studio and woodworking shop
  • Walking trails
  • Maintenance and housekeeping
  • Local transportation
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • and so much more!

3. What is daily life like—and how do residents stay connected and engaged?

Beyond brochures and amenities, what does everyday life actually feel like?

Ask to see a calendar of events and observe what’s happening during your visit. Even more importantly, talk with current residents—their experiences offer valuable insight into the culture and sense of community.

Also ask about opportunities for connection and purpose, such as clubs, volunteer opportunities, wellness programs, and lifelong learning.

At BRC, daily life is centered around connection, purpose, and the freedom to explore personal interests in a supportive, engaged community.

4. What are the dining options like?

Dining is a central part of daily life and can greatly shape your experience.

Ask about menu variety, flexibility, dietary accommodations, dining venues, and hours. If possible, try a meal during your visit.

At BRC, dining is about more than meals—it’s about choice, quality, and creating spaces where residents can gather, connect, and enjoy the overall culinary experience.

These four questions are merely the start of learning about a retirement community—a place that may become home. Next month, I’ll be back with additional questions to discover how the community works and if it’s right for you.
