STERLING VA: (ROCKTOWN NOW)— A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. EDT for northwestern Page County, southwestern Shenandoah County, and central Rockingham County, as heavy rainfall from earlier thunderstorms continues to pose a threat.

As of 5:19 p.m., Doppler radar indicated that between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen across the affected areas. While no additional rainfall is expected this evening, flash flooding is either ongoing or anticipated to begin shortly due to the saturated ground and overwhelmed drainage systems.

Hazard: Flash flooding caused by earlier thunderstorms.
Source: National Weather Service radar data.
Impact: Flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying or poorly drained locations.

Communities at risk include Luray, Broadway, Timberville, Shenandoah, Mount Jackson, Stanley, New Market, and several others. Flood-prone roads such as Longs Road at Meadowview Drive, River Road at Egypt Bend Road, Old Forge Road near Hawksbill Creek, and Linden Avenue at Virginia Avenue are particularly vulnerable.

Authorities urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains the key message, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

Residents are encouraged to report any flooding to local emergency services when it is safe to do so.
