ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — After more than three decades of dedicated service to the residents of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Captain Dennis Albertson has announced his retirement.
Albertson began his public safety career in 1991 with the Harrisonburg Police Department, where he served for 20 years. During his tenure, he held a variety of specialized roles, including Hostage Negotiator, Accident Investigator and Reconstructionist, Training Officer, and Motor Officer. His work contributed to both frontline operations and departmental training initiatives.
Following a brief period in the private sector, Albertson returned to public service in 2011, joining Rockingham County Fire and Rescue (RCFR) as a part-time member. He transitioned to full-time service in 2015. In 2019, he was promoted to EMS Training Lieutenant and later advanced to Training Captain in 2023.
Throughout his career with RCFR, Captain Albertson played an active role beyond station and classroom duties. He served on the department’s HAZMAT Team, Drone Team, Honor Guard, and Peer Support Team, contributing to both emergency response capabilities and internal team support.
In addition to his career roles, Albertson has been a committed volunteer with the Broadway Volunteer Fire Department since 2010.
Colleagues and community members alike recognize Albertson’s long-standing commitment to public safety and professional development across multiple agencies. As he enters retirement, he leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and mentorship.
