AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Augusta County Public School Board discussed advanced math for next year’s middle schoolers at last night’s meeting.

Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Sarah Melton provided an update on recent legislation that requires 5th through 8th graders who earn high scores on the end-of-year Standards of Learning math assessment to be automatically enrolled in advanced courses the following school year.

Melton said ACPS had advanced math courses for sixth and seventh graders in place several years ago but was eliminated by the state. She added that the County already offers Algebra 1 for 8th graders and Geometry for 9th graders.

The new requirement goes into effect July 1, impacting the 2025-2026 school year.
