Rockingham County supervisors have unanimously approved a request to rezone land east of Harrisonburg for a major housing development.

The 280-unit project is planned for an area off of Boyers Road, near Sentara R-M-H. The board voted 5-to-nothing in favor of the proposal during yesterday’s meeting after tabling the decision last month.

While construction isn’t set to begin for another two years, several residents spoke out in opposition to the development during a previous meeting, citing potential traffic issues and overpopulation in nearby schools stemming from an influx of new neighbors.

Supervisors agreed that a traffic light will need to be installed in the area.
