Some construction work in the Bayse area could cost Shenandoah County a decent chunk of change.

The county is ordered to pay nearly 14-thousand dollars in civil penalties according to a consent order obtained from the Department of Environmental Quality.  The DEQ says in the fall of 2021 Shenandoah County did some work aimed at protecting sewer lines.  It was feared that erosion caused by Stony Creek would eventually lead to raw sewage being released into the waterway.  Unfortunately for the county, that work lead to the death of a state protected Wood Turtle and ran afoul of other DEQ regulations.

Public comment on the proposed penalty opened this week and closes October 10th.
