Tuesday was productive for fire crews battling the Matts Creek Fire, which is slowly coming under control despite having now burned nearly 11-thousand acres in Jefferson National Forest, near Natural Bridge.
Data from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group shows that blaze, as of this morning, is 33 percent contained.
Operations supervisor Troy Floyd said that the intentional fires set along ridgelines to the northwest of the area worked like a charm, consuming fuel the wildfire could have used to cross over into a populated community.

Much-needed rain today is expected to help subdue that fire even further.
Rockbridge County Schools are closed for a second straight day because of smoke in the area.
