West Virginia Governor Jim Justice has declared a state of emergency for five counties after flash flooding yesterday dumped six inches of rain in a single morning.

Kanawha County leadership said that 22 people required rescue in that county alone. The worst of the flooding was concentrated east of Charleston, where creeks jumped their banks and mudslides closed at least one major highway.

Justice said during a press briefing that the mountainous terrain wasn’t helping.

So far, there are no reported deaths – but more than 100 homes were damaged in the deluge.
