SEATTLE – The Toronto Blue Jays selected James Madison junior Joe Vogatsky in the 14th round with the 424th overall pick of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.
Vogatsky represents the 10th Duke to be drafted under Head Coach Marlin Ikenberry and the first fulltime pitcher since 2019. With the draft selections of Chase DeLauter and Nick Zona last year, the Dukes have had back-to-back years with a draft pick for the first time since 2018-19. Vogatsky is the fourth Duke to be drafted by Toronto in program history and the first since Kurt Isenberg was selected 110th overall in the fourth round of the 2003 Draft.
The Warrenton, Va. native is coming off a season where he went 4-1 with five saves, good for a tie for eighth in the Sun Belt Conference, as he made 21 appearances out of the bullpen. He posted a 3.34 ERA across 29.2 innings, striking out 36 batters and holding opposing hitters to a .217 batting average.
In his career, Vogatsky made 41 appearances with seven starts, earning six wins to go with the five saves and a 6.43 ERA. He threw 71.1 innings, striking out 78 batters.
