RICHMOND VA: (WSVA) – Some Virginians will be getting a new area code this year. That is because certain parts of Central Virginia that use 8-0-4 will now have a new area code.
The State Corporation Commission reports some areas, including Richmond, Petersburg as well as Chesterfield and Henrico Counties, will soon be using 6-8-6 as the new area code.
Officials expect the 8-0-4 area code to possibly run out of available numbers sometime this year.
Current customers who already have the 8-0-4 area code will not be affected.
S-C-C officials anticipate the new 6-8-6 area code to last for over 30 years.
