Due to increasingly dry conditions, both Rockingham County and the City of Harrisonburg have enacted an open-air burn ban, effective immediately and until further notice.

In a joint statement yesterday, Harrisonburg Fire Chief Matt Tobia and Rockingham County Fire and Rescue Chief Jeremy Holloway said that the ban applies to any open burning – like brush and debris burns, bonfires and other recreational fires.

They urge residents to use extreme caution when lighting grills or another open-flame cooking device.

The ban will be evaluated daily to ensure it remains in place only as long as necessary.
