LAFAYETTE, La. – James Madison softball could not come back from a three-run deficit and fell short of the Sun Belt Conference Championship semifinals in a 4-1 loss to No. 3 South Alabama on Thursday morning.
JMU finishes its season with a record of 28-19, the 14th time the program has finished with 28 wins or more. South Alabama advances to the semifinals and play the winner of No. 1 Louisiana and No. 8 Louisiana Monroe.
Freshman Kylah Berry worked six innings in the circle for the Dukes. Berry tallied three strikeouts, one walk and yielded five hits.
Sophomore Abbie Campbell led the way at the plate with one hit and one RBI.
Graduate student Hannah Shifflett, junior Kylee Gleason and freshman Bella Henzler each noted a hit.
How It Happened:
• South Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning from a JMU fielding error and an RBI single.
• In the bottom of the third inning, South Alabama hit a sac fly and an RBI single that brought in two more runs making the score 4-0.
• Abbie Campbell drove in Hallie Hall from a single in the top of the fifth inning to change the score to 4-1.
