For the first time in over 15 years, a gallon of diesel fuel is on track to cost less than a gallon of gas.
Diesel emission reform in 2007 led to more stringent production standards, increasing the cost of the less-refined fuel. Last year, diesel prices peaked at an all-time high of 5-81 per gallon. Diesel in Harrisonburg is now available for as low as $4.19 per gallon and $3.89 per gallon in Winchester.
However, GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan said on the Over the Barrel podcast this week that those days may be over.
He added that summertime gas prices are expected to soar, while diesel prices will continue to fall as the use of heating oil plummets.
