ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The newly-renovated Route 259 bridge in northern Broadway has been renamed to honor a Rockingham County Marine who died in Vietnam.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed that the bridge on West Lee Street, near Hillyard Middle School, will now be known as the William M. Pangle Bridge.

Pangle graduated from Broadway High School in 1966, where he was a standout football player. Board chairman Dewey Ritchie said that the bridge was the perfect location for a tribute.

Pangle was serving as a Marine Corps private in 1968 when he was killed in action. He was just 19 years old.
