BERGTON, Va (Rocktown Now) – A crewmember with Rockingham County Fire and Rescue was seriously injured Wednesday while battling one of several wildfires that broke out across the Valley.

Chief Jeremy Holloway said that the accident happened while firefighters were guarding vulnerable buildings at the scene of a nearly 2,000-acre fire outside of Bergton.

A tree branch fell on him and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The name of the firefighter has not been released at this time.

So far, this is the only known major injury to an emergency worker during the ongoing wildfire response.
